Drywall ceiling crack repair

You may also notice cracks in the corners of rooms or near the ceiling. As temperatures change, the drywall in your home contracts and expands just like other solids. That normal process of expansion and contraction is stressful for drywall and can eventually cause tiny cracks along the seams. Another common cause of drywall cracks is the settling of the building. Think about ancient cities from Roman times that have gradually sunk into the earth.

If the building is sitting atop fill dirt, you may have a greater problem with settling. A cracked or faulty foundation can also be a serious issue that results in many stress cracks through the drywall. The drywall keeps cracking in the same spot for some reason. First of all, purchase some fiberglass mesh drywall tape at a local hardware store or home improvement store.

Then get yourself a container of patch compound or drywall mud , as well as some primer. Some products have both patch compound and primer together in one convenient formula. Be sure the paint matches exactly. First, apply strips of drywall tape to the crack. Usually, one side of the fiberglass drywall tape is already sticky.

If not, use some of the drywall compounds like glue to help the tape adhere to the wall. Center the tape so it covers the crack completely. Add a thin coat of your spackle with primer. Lay the tape over the compound you just applied and use the knife to push the tape into the compound.

If necessary, cut the tape in short lengths to follow the line of a really crooked crack. If you bought fiberglass tape, you can skip the embedding coat of compound under the tape because it is self-sticking. Otherwise, you do everything the same way.

I have a question. I have several areas in my living room and kitchen that need repair. I have sheetrock ceilings and they first got long cracks in them and now the sheetrock is actually starting to fall. Where the sheetrock crack is the sheetrock has dropped down about a inch from the ceiling. What do I do to fix this problem. I am afraid its going to keep dropping and pull the whole ceiling down.

I have a hair line crack in the ceiling, trvels from one end to the other …………got any ideas? I have a new crack in my drywall ceiling the house is almost 48 years old and has the popcorn coating. The crack showed up 2 weeks ago when the neighbor had this very large truck dump tree trunks my whole house shook. I checked the block foundation and no cracks have shown up. How do I repair the crack with out redoing the whole celing? We have a crack at the long edge seam of the drywall in the ceiling.

I installed the drywall in and the crack first appeared about 4 years ago. We live in Northern Ontario and we are absent from the house from November to April with minimal heating of 45 degrees. We run a dehumidifier and lower the humidity so water does not accumulate at the base of the windows.

Scraping perpendicularly to the crack will only cause more damage. Try to use long pieces of tape, if possible taping the entire crack with one piece. Use more joint compound than you need rather than less. You will sand off excess later. After the compound has completely dried sand down any ridges that resulted from the putty knife.

This step will be messy! Everything in the room will get some dust on it, so either use dropcloths or be ready to clean when you're done. Also, be careful not to get dust in your eyes, or inhale dust. You may wish to wear goggles and a dust mask. It is important to note that a crack in drywall may indicate a more critical problem with the framing in your walls or ceiling.

Please do not assume that this repair will prevent further cracking. Cancel: I did not complete this guide.
